Dave Canales gushes praise about Xavier Legette on day 1 of rookie minicamp
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

Dave Canales knows the Carolina Panthers didn't make the wrong decision in drafting Xavier Legette at No. 32 in the 2024 NFL Draft.

On Friday, the Panthers enjoyed the first day of rookie minicamp, and following the short practice, Canales only had good things to say about what Legette brings to the table.

"Xavier’s a big, fast man," Canales said. "So there is a change of pace. He’s covering ground like you’re not used to seeing."

What stood out about Legette was his size. Canales couldn't help but notice just how imposing his frame can be when lining up across from a defensive back.

“The way that he carries 225, it’s pretty incredible. It’s just really well distributed in his body. So it doesn’t look like there’s this really thick man,” Canales said. “He’s just so proportionately built. And then his movement skills — the way he controls his body, the way that he gets in and out of breaks — it’s pretty special. To see him out there moving around like he does is impressive.”

Legette has already explained that he is patching the holes in his game, improving aspects of his route running.

The largest question is whether his chemistry with Bryce Young will be easy to come by. Legette, however, isn't worried.

“When Monday comes and everybody’s in the building,” Legette said, “we’ll get everything on track.”
